Visa exemption for holders of diplomatic passports

A visa exemption agreement for holders of diplomatic, service or special passports regulates the reciprocal visa exemption for that category of persons. This applies for non-working stays of a maximum of 90 days within a period of 180 days.

The Schengen Visa Code allows countries to make their own decision on whether they enter into such agreements for these categories of persons.

Switzerland has signed agreements on reciprocal visa exemption with countries with which it has enjoyed a good relationship for many years. Persons from countries in this category thus have greater ease of travel, which promotes international cooperation and strengthens Switzerland’s position as a base for international organisations. The signing of a visa exemption agreement for holders of diplomatic, service or special passports is generally conditional on the signing of a readmission or migration agreement.
