Prevention of irregular migration (PiM)

Since 1 January 2008, the Asylum Act (AsylA) contains a clause on the prevention of irregular migration (Art. 93 (2)).

Measures can be taken at the political level (migration policy) or operational level (projects) to prevent uncontrolled and unmanaged migration. Such projects may relate to the various causes of irregular migration and fall under one of the following categories:

  • Improving living conditions
  • Fostering human security
  • Communication / information
  • Partnership / dialogue / specific research in migration
  • Capacity building in migration management and return assistance

The following projects are encompassed in this category:

  • Information and awareness campaigns for potential migrants
  • Return assistance for irregular migrants from a country of transit (projects for “stranded migrants”).
