Accurate measurement of gas mixture proportions is of great importance in many areas. In the environmental protection area for example, it must be possible to measure gaseous pollutants or greenhouse gases reliably and with great precision over long periods of time. Other areas of application are biotechnology, medicine, road safety, industry and personal protection.
In the gas analysis laboratory, we ensure traceability to internationally agreed reference values with our high-precision measurement devices and measurement procedures. With our services we support the administration, industry and research in their quest for reliable and accurate measurement.
In order to keep up with the pace of development, we are constantly refining our measurement facilities. With this aim in mind, we conduct various research and development projects. Our specialist area is the dynamic generation and analysis of gas mixture standards down to trace quantities.
Our services include the measurement of gaseous substance proportions in the nmol/mol to mmol/mol (or %) range and flow rates in the 1 ml/min to 30 l/min range.
Analyses and calibrations
With our analytical and calibration services, we ensure that your reference gases and measuring devices meet national standards. Our analysis and calibration certificates are internationally recognised.
Approvals and conformity assessments
We carry out national authorisations of furnace exhaust gas measurement instruments and breath alcohol measurement instruments. Please contact METAS Cert for conformity assessments of measurement instruments for gas mixture proportions in accordance with the new, global concept instruments.
Every year we calibrate around 300 furnace exhaust gas measurement instruments and more than 3,000 breath alcohol measurement instruments.

R & D
With the aid of research and development projects, we keep our measurement facilities and expertise at the forefront of technology. We thus ensure our ability to offer the required services and promote innovation in the years to come. In the course of this, we work with other metrology institutes, universities, the administration and industry. We are involved in a number of European projects within the framework of EURAMET research programs. In november 2014 a new domain called “AtmoChemECV” started with the aim to develop new reference gas mixtures for climate significant compounds (at trace levels).
On going projects
METAS coordinated this project aimed to develop traceability for ammonia (NH3) measurements in the atmosphere (nmol/mol).
As a research partner of the Commission for Technology and Innovation (CTI), you can use our capabilities in research and development of the metrology for reactive gases at trace levels.
The scope of one CTI project with LNI Swissgas is to build a reference gas generator metrologically traceable for reactive gases. The generator will be available on the market in 2018. Contact: Calabrese Daniel from LNI Swissgas.
