Asylum applications filed after evading the border controls - the applications of persons entering Switzerland illegally

The majority of asylum seekers evade the border controls and enter Switzerland illegally. In this way they hope to avoid the risk of removal at the border. As a rule, persons entering Switzerland illegally are rather well informed about Swiss asylum procedures and mostly also know the address of an Federal Office for Migration reception and procedure centre. After crossing the border illegally, they mostly go to one of the SEM reception centres and file their asylum application there.

Asylum applications filed by foreign nationals already officially residing in Switzerland

Political changes in a country may result in the fact that citizens of that state who are temporarily residing in Switzerland risk political persecution on their return.

Persons affected by such circumstances and already in the possession of a residence permit in Switzerland may submit their asylum application directly to one of the five reception and procedure centres of the State Secretariat for Migration (SEM). However, the asylum seekers may stay in their allocated canton of residence until completion of their proceedings.
